I was sick again today and took a rest day, although I’m feeling better and can’t wait to go for a run! My fever broke in the middle of the night last night, although it cropped up a little this afternoon. Only thing left is a sore throat but my body is feeling much better.
Ate healthy again on a sick day so I feel good about that. Thanks for all the kind thoughts, everyone!
Oh, one note: I recalculated my calories burned per day, without exercise, to get about 2300 (round number). So I’m shooting for around 1700 calories (600 deficit) on days I don’t exercise, like today, but higher when I do exercise.
B: Sprouted toast w/ almond butter. Coffee. 230.
S: Kashi Golean Crunch cereal w/ soymilk. Orange. 320.
L: vegetarian chili and brown rice. 265.
S: Raw almonds. Blue corn chips and salsa. Dried apricots. Yogurt w/ banana and almonds. (Not all of these snacks were eaten together.) Total: 280.
D: Vegetarian chili. 400.
Totals:
Ate: 1700.
Burned: 2300.
Deficit: 600.
Hey Leo
Hope you feel better soon.
FYI … regarding calculations on deficits and wt. loss … you might find that at some point, despite significant deficts, wt loss becomes increasingly harder. I think this is because the body becomes much more efficient at the exercise (less cals burned) but that is hardly something I know scientifically.

Glad to hear you’re on the mend!
I also struggle with non-exercise days – I feel like a slug and get disgusted with myself so easily. It’s so hard to accept the fact that I have to rest my body and I’m actually doing a good thing – your experience this weekend totally confirms that.
Totally random question – you eat a lot of fresh fruits and veg – are they grown on Guam, or flown in?
Hey Leo –
Glad to hear you’re doing better. Your blog has really encouraged me to start eating healthier and begin an exercise routine. This month I’m just focusing on eating – great meals, healthy snacks and good breakfasts for our family of four. (No more Poptarts!!) Next month I’ll focus on the exercise part. The really great thing, is that my husband is on board, saying we both need to work on our eating and exercise habits, so it’s making it more fun for both of us.
I’ve been blessed to not have struggled with my weight (yet ;), however, I was eating junk for snacks, almost no fruits, lots of carbs and soda and feeling bloated and tired all the time. I have two beautiful children that I adore and I want to be a happy, healthy positive role model for them, so it was time I straightened up!
Thank you for sharing so much of your own experiences with us – it helps to know there are other 35 year old busy parents out there who do take the time to care for their health and the health of their loved ones. I also enjoy your input about simplifying your life. I’ve read Elaine St. James’ books years ago, and I’m re-reading one of them now. It’s so true that the most important things are not the things that can be bought – they are priceless.
Today is day 5 with no soda! That’s pretty good for a girl from the southern part of the US where Moutain Dew and Pepsi are ‘official drinks!’ Who knows – I may just end up taking up running!
Thanks for the kind thoughts, guys!
@Mary: truthfully, most of the fruits and veggies I eat are flown in. There are lots of good tropical fruits here on Guam — I have some star apple on my counter right now — but for some reason I eat more of the non-local fruits. Oh, but I have a huge mango tree full of fruit right now that will be ripe in about a week! Can’t wait!
@Denise: Congrats on your choice to be a healthy parent and on 5 days of no soda! That’s great! I know how hard it can be to kick any habit, so be proud of your success. Report back in a little bit and let us know how you’re doing from time to time. Good luck!
